JIM & WS Team Summits Mt Khyam Tso Massif in Ladakh

The Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM & WS), Pahalgam, has successfully completed a high-altitude mountaineering expedition to the Mt Khyam Tso Massif in the Rumtse Phu region of Ladakh, marking another significant milestone in India's adventure sports and mountaineering capabilities.

The 22-member expedition, led by Colonel Hem Chandra Singh, commenced on June 26, 2026, after being flagged off from the institute. Following a systematic acclimatisation programme, the team successfully summited Peak Pt 5901M on July 2 despite adverse weather conditions. During the ascent, Colonel Singh also carried out the first-ever paragliding flight from an altitude of 5,600 metres from the peak.

Undeterred by challenging terrain and inclement weather, the expedition members scaled the 6,090-metre peak and Peak Pt 5944M on July 3, showcasing exceptional endurance, technical expertise and teamwork. The team achieved its final objective on July 5 by successfully summiting Mt Khyam-III (6,018 metres) before making a safe descent to the base.

The successful expedition underscores the capabilities of JIM & WS in conducting complex high-altitude missions and reflects India's growing focus on promoting mountaineering, adventure sports and exploration in the Himalayan region. The achievement is expected to encourage greater participation in adventure activities while strengthening the country's expertise in high-altitude operations.
