Creating a Structured Mechanism need of the hour for Creating 300 MTPA Steel production capacity and boosting demand : PHDCCI

The Minerals & Metals Committee of PHDCCI organised a Conclave on “Creating 300 MTPA Steel Capacity & Boosting Consumption of Steel :  Challenges & Opportunities”,which was addressed by a galaxy of Industry Leaders.

Mr Anil Chaudhary, Chair, Minerals & Metals Committee, in his detailed address called for creating of robust and structured mechanism for boosting Steel Capacity and Demand in India. He informed that industry would only invest in new capacity addition if there is a hope of sustained demand of Steel in future. Terming low cost labor, availability of iron ore and huge coast line as enablers for achieving the target of 300 million tonne per annum steel capacity in India, he informed that going forward mobilising funds and controlling carbon emissions in steel industry would be the biggest challenges. He called for increasing use of steel in construction sector and rural areas to give boost to steel demand.

Mr V R Sharma, Vice Chairman, JSPL, stressed on the importance of decarbonisation in steel production process and suggested that Government should take steps to provide Green Energy to Steel industry at affordable cost considering huge investments required for its production.

Other speakers at the Conclave included – Mr A K Singh, Director (Technical, Projects and Raw Materials), Steel Authority of India Ltd., who appreciated the Government for bringing out Gati Shakti and Bharat Mala schemes will go a long way in increasing the demand of steel.

Mr A K Saxena, Director (Technical), Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, spoke about focusing on availability of adequate raw material and supply chain management for achieving 300 MTPA steel production capacity

 

Dr. Anil Dhawan,  Director General, Alloy Steel Producers Association of India, called for making RoDTEP  & Scrappage policy steel industry friendly, finding way to circumvent Non Tariff barriers placed by European countries and USA and bring out an EV policy to boost EV production in India.

Mr Vinayak Vipul, Partner, Ernst & Young LLP, suggested that Steel Industry should invest in R & D and Green Steel to stay competitive and that the Government should keep the interest of steel industry in mind while signing FTAs.

Mr N Mukherjee, Steel & Metallurgy Magazine, spoke about the role of media in promoting awareness about benefits of using steel in various sectors to boost demand.

Mr M M Ghosh, Consultant, Institute for Steel Development & Growth spoke about various promoting use of Steel in construction sector and rural housing.
