C-DOT and PRL developed indigenous fiber based quantum key distribution system with Free Space QKD system

Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) and Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) have achieved significant milestone: For the first time in the country, both the organizations have integrated the Free Space QKD system from Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) with C-DOT's indigenous demonstrated the integration of a fiber-based quantum key distribution (QKD) system, thereby establishing an end-to-end quantum communication link incorporating both fiber and free space as the transport medium.

Demonstration of end to end quantum communication link with C-DOT's fiber based QKD integrated with Free Space QKD of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in the presence of Professor Ajay Sood, Principal Scientific Advisor to the Government of India and Dr. Neeraj Mittal during the 2nd International Quantum Communication Conclave held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.

Rapid advancements in quantum computers and quantum algorithms have jeopardized the security of existing special technologies of data security as the huge computational power of quantum computers can easily break the confidentiality of the key used for encryption/decryption. The computational capabilities of quantum computers are likely to be millions of times faster than the most advanced classical computers available today. But while the enormous computational power is useful to solve many daily issues and complex problems in various sectors like financial, chemical, pharmaceutical and automotive sectors, it also comes at a cost to protect the existing communication and data security infrastructure when gaining access to rival quantum computers. Will create danger for.

This present threat can be addressed by quantum communication, another new emerging branch of quantum technologies. Quantum key distribution (QKD), one of the technologies of quantum communication, solves this problem and enables communication networks to ensure foolproof security even in the presence of quantum computers. Thus, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) will play a vital role in the economic development of the country and will find wide use in strategic sectors such as defence, government communications, pharmaceutical and healthcare industries, financial services, data centers and telecommunication networks. Quantum key distribution (QKD) can be deployed to provide end-to-end security over various medium communication networks, including optical fiber, free space as well as satellite.
